Error description

  • When options are assigned to the "Tag & Categories" view or the
"Datastore" view, these options are not propagated to child
    objects.
This can cause the default vADP proxy to be selected when an SLA
runs, and not the expected vADP proxy.

Options that are not propagated are:
     - Skip Read-only datastores
     - Skip temporary datastores mounted for Instant Access
     - Proxy assignment
     - Make VM snapshot application/file system consistent
     - VM Snapshot retry attempts
     - Fail back to unquiesced snapshot if quiesced snapshot fails
     - Truncate SQL logs
     - Catalog file metadata
     - user credentials for the Agent

    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Plus 10.1.x

    Initial Impact: Medium

    Additional Keywords: SPP, SPplus, TS001212591

Local fix

  • Set the required options at VM level. This needs to be done for
every VM included in the SLA

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Spectrum Protect Plus fixes an issue where options that are
    selected within Manage Protection->Hypervisors->VMware->Backup
do not take effect and cause the backup operation to execute
as if the options were not set.

There are multiple views for resources within the Backup screen.

As you select a resource, the Options button is enabled. The
options determine the behavior of the backup operation. There
are multiple levels to resources, which take on a hierarchy
representation. Setting options at a lower resource level will
override values set at a higher level. For instance, resource
option values set at the VM level will take precedence over
option values set at the datastore level.

Given the hierarchical nature of VMware resources, there is a
condition that two parent objects, two datastores for instance,
will have the same option value manually set differently.
If both datastores are the parent of a VM, then one of the
datastore's values will be used if the user has not explicitly
set the option value for the VM.

A bug was found and fixed related to the propagation of the
option values to lower level resources. Resource selections from
various views also impact this condition. This results in issues

such as the backup job not using the expected VADP proxy.

In addition, IBM Spectrum Protect Plus has been updated to
alert the user if it detects the condition that two parents of
a child resource have the same option set to different values.
