IT24884: RESTORE OF A SINGLE DISK INSIDE A VM FAILS WHEN SAN TRANSPORT METHOD IS USED

Error description

  • When a VM with multiple disks has been backed up using IBM
    Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection for
    VMware and a restore is done from one or more disks to the
    existing VM using SAN transport method, this restore will fail
    if Change Block Tracking (CBT) is enabled for this VM.
    
    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments - Data Protection
    for VMware - All support versions.
    
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    
    The restore will fail with following messages:
    
    ANS0361I DIAG: ..\..\common\vm\vmcommonrestvddk.cpp(2310):
    vmVMwareWriteToVMDKDisk(): vddk Write failed (rc=4398):
    startSector=xxxxxx, numberOfSectors=512, startByteOffset=yyyyyy
    ANS9365E VMware vStorage API error for virtual machine
    'VM_NAME'.

       TSM file          : ..\..\common\vm\vmvddksdk.cpp (3119)
       API return code   : 1
       API error message : Unknown error
    
    Documentation needs to be updated with this behavior.

Local fix

  • Change the transport method to NBD, NBDSSL or HotAdd when
    restoring a single disk in an existing VM.

Problem conclusion

  • The corrected information will be published with the next
    release of the Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments
    documentation and included in the V8.1 Documentation Updates
    tech note. The updates will be located in the Topic titled as:
    Restore, which describes how to use the vmcli command to restore
    backups of VMs or VM templates.
