Error description

  • The Recovery Agent GUI can unexpectedly exit and crash when
    querying the available backup data from the server.
    The RecoveryAgent_040.sf log will show the Recovery Agent stops
    while processing the guest list from the server :

    [<timestamp>](1a38)->I6.XPR MOUNT : parsing repository tsm:
    <target_node_name>@<server>
    [<timestamp>](1a38)->I6.XPR MOUNT : Loaded VM 'vm1'
    [<timestamp>](1a38)->I6.XPR MOUNT : Loaded VM 'vm2'
    [<timestamp>](1a38)->I6.XPR MOUNT : Loaded VM 'vm3'
    [<timestamp>](1a38)->I6.XPR MOUNT : Loaded VM 'vm4'
    ...

    This can happen when unexpected data is received from the
    server causing a buffer overflow.
    The root cause of the unexpected data received from the server
    could not be found but the Recovery Agent should not crash and
    produce a more meaningful message.

    This behaviour was fixed in version 8.1.2.0 as documented in
    APAR IT18933 but is not fixed in version 8.1.4.0

    Products affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
    for VMware Recovery Agent version 8.1.4 on Microsoft Windows x64
    platform.

    IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
    for Microsoft Hyper-V Recovery Agent version 8.1.4
    on Microsoft Windows x64 platform.
    If you are using Data Protection for Microsoft Hyper-V
    version 8.1.4 refer to APAR IT25378.

    Exception Code = c0000409 means "stack buffer overflow".

    There will be no recoveryagent.exe dump file automatically
    generated upon this case.
    The Windows OS needs to be set up to enable abnormal exiting
    processes to generate a dump.

Local fix

  • Verify the backup data consistency by testing a full restore :
    'RESTORE VM'.
    If it cannot be recovered, consider to rename the original
    guest filespace and start a new backup series.
