IT23731: SPECTRUM PROTECT SERVER ON AIX MAY RUN INTO PAGING AND OUT OF MEMORY CONDITION

Error description

  • .
    Running IBM Spectrum Protect Server on AIX, the server process -
    dsmserv's memory usage will continue increase and may trigger
    heavy paging and cause AIX system abort when paging space
    exhaust.
    AIX IBM Spectrum Protect users running "local protect " may
    likely run into this issue. We are not aware of anything causing
     this issue outside of local protect.
    
    L2/customer Diagnostics:
    
    Execute :
    1: Spectrum protect Server command: show alloc
    2:AIX command :
     ps -ef|grep dsmserv
    
    svmon -P pid_of_dsmserv -O unit=KB,segment=on,filtertype=working
    | egrep -v clnt
    
    for example:
    1:show alloc:
    
    ...
      Space in ordinary blocks in use       813,092,160 bytes
      Space in free ordinary blocks       3,194,387,936 bytes
    ...
    
    From above data::
    -"  Space in ordinary blocks in use" or "in use memory": ~800MB
    ~" Space in free ordinary blocks" or "free memory" :   ~3GB
    
    2: from svmon:

    From above data:
    dsmserv process used ~3.3GB Virtual memory.  This value is close
    to the "free memory "+ in use memory". While ideally the amount
    of memory used by dsmserv process should close to the " in use
    memory".
    
    
    This will not change the memory requirements for the server,
    this only helps us to not get into paging space as frequently or
    to minimize the effects once we do need to get into paging
    space.
    

Local fix

  • Recycle IBM Spectrum Protect Server instance when the paging is
    high or periodically to release the memory.
