Error description

  • During a Linux mount operation the following error is shown:

    On the VE User Interface:
WARNING ANS3141W Mounting the following devices failed:
     'lvm lvs -a --noheadings lvm2'.
WARNING ANS3150W The block device '/dev/sdb' of type
'LVM2_member' failed to mount. Volume group "lvm2" not found.
Cannot process volume group lvm2 '
ERROR ANS3101E The mount operation for virtual machine 'vm01'
failed with rc = 5. For more details, check the Recovery Agent
     logs.
ERROR ANS3174E (RC6841) The virtual machine mount failed.

On the File Restore User Interface:
"An error occurred while loading the backup. If the problem
     persists, contact your administrator"
    The frapi.log file shows:
<log4j:message><![CDATA[An error occurred while loading the
backup. If the problem persists, contact your administrator.]]>
     </log4j:message>
    ...
    <log4j:data name="action" value="MountLoad"/>
    ...
    <tsm:returnCode>6841</tsm:returnCode>

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :
A service trace of the Linux mount proxy client shows the
     following errors :

      Volume group "lvm2" not found
      Cannot process volume group lvm2

The error is logged because the Linux guest VM at the time of
the backup contains one or more LVM Physical Volumes without
    a Volume Group assigned.

To verify this run the 'lvm pvs' command on the guest VM and
check if the Volume Group is not empty for each Physical Volumes

As example the following command shows 2 Physical Volumes,
/dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, without a Volume Group assigned.
    >lvm pvs
PV VG Fmt Attr PSize Pfree
      /dev/sda1 vg_01 lvm2 a--u 2.45g 0
      /dev/sda2 vg_02 lvm2 a--u 5.22g 0
      /dev/sdb lvm2 ---- 55.00m 55.00m
      /dev/sdc lvm2 ---- 55.00m 55.00m

    Initial Impact: Low
Additional Keywords: SP TSM VE FLR

    Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments V7.1 and V8.1

Local fix

  • Ensure that a Volume Group is assigned to each Physical Volumes
of each Linux guest VM used for IBM Spectrum for Virtual
    Environments Linux mount operations.
