Error description

  • Restore of a VMware guest can fail with the following error:
ANS0323E partialObjOffset value for partial object retrieve is
    invalid.
This restore failure can occur when the following conditions
existed when the backup of the VM was performed:
    - ASNODE option was in use
    - COMPRESSION was set to YES
    - DEDUPLICATION was set to NO
In this situation the backup data should not be compressed, but
    it is.
The following message will be logged in the error log at the
    time the backup was performed:
ANS4164W Compression is currently enabled, but the virtual
machine backup for 'VM000001' is not compressed because
client-side deduplication is not being used.
The backup summary statistics will show that the objects were
not compressed, however, this is not accurate.
    ANE4968I (Session: 281796, Node: VM000001) Objects compressed
    by: 0% (SESSION: 281796)

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
Review the error or schedule logs for occurrences of the
    ANS4164W message.
Collect a client trace using the SERVICE trace flag, review the
data for instances of objects which show compressType=1 and
    clientDeduplicated=0.

    Initial Impact:
    High
     Versions Affected:
IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual Environments: Data Protection
for VMware 8.1.0 and higher on Microsoft Windows and Linux

Local fix

  • Ensure that client deduplication is enabled when client
    compression is enabled.
