Error description

  • A client restore or retrieve can witness poor performance on the
query operations associated with the restore/retrieve processing
when there are damaged extents within the IBM Spectrum Protect
Server database. The existence of any damage can trigger this.
The more entries in the table the perf can get worse. However,
the degradation is more dependent on the number of inventory
queries being performed. For example, if the retrieve is for a
Data Protect SAP Client which makes thousands upon thousands of
ArchQry calls, the performance degradation can be so significant
that it appears the client is not making any progress at all.
Performance statistics on the Server for the client thread will
show a large amount of time is spent in DB2RegExec, for example:
Operation Count Tottime Avgtime Mintime Maxtime
     ---------------------------------------------
     DB2 Reg Exec 3116 240.706 0.077 0.000 0.674
The existence of the damaged chunks can also affect the
    performance of a client backup.
    DIAGNOSTICS:
To check for damage in the container the stgpool:
      q damaged <pool name>
If damage is reported, then the following command can be used to
re-process the previously marked damaged data to
determine if it is still in a damaged state:
          audit container stg=<pool name> action=scandamaged
    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Server
    Initial Impact: High
Additional Keywords: TSM, Tivoli, Storage, Manager, TDP

Local fix

  • Either repair the
damaged entries OR delete them with AUDIT CONTAINER STG=<pool
    name> REMOVEDAMAGED=YES.
