Error description

  • In 810+ application protection fails with failed to unfreeze
    error due to
    1. incorrect flush mechanism in
    \common\vm\winnt\TSMVmwareDpVSS\VSS\VSSLog.cpp
    in Flush() if m_bCanFlush is false - we DO flush and set it to
    true and after that we don't flush. But once we call
    DisableFlush() the next flush does write data.

    2. new log entries and Flush() calls added in defect 125668 in
    \common\vm\winnt\TSMVmwareDpVSS\ProxyBAClient\CProxyBAClientModu
    le.cpp in CProxyBAClientModule::ActivateVSSFreeze()
    \common\vm\winnt\TSMVmwareDpVSS\ProxyBAServer\ProxyDispatcher.cp
    p in CProxyDispatcher::VSSFreeze()

    So as a result we do the following:
    1. Call DisableFlush() which actually enebles it
    2. Call freeze
    3. Try to write logs to disk in Flush() when everything is
    frozen. -> reach 10 sec timout and fail.

    Products affected:
    IBM Spectrum Protect Backup-Archive Client version 7.1 on
    Windows
    Note: The Backup-Archive Client is a prerequisite to using the
    Data Protection for VMware. In Data Protection for VMware
    environments, the Backup-Archive Client is also known as the
    data mover.

    This problem also affects IBM Spectrum Protect for Virtual
    Environments: Data Protection for VMware 8.1.0. If you are using
    Data Protection for VMware 8.1.0, refer to APAR IT18396.

Local fix

  • Local Fix:
    - remove flush calls after freezing
    - fix Flush()
    - add EnableFlush()
