Error description

  • For 7.1.x and 8.1.x server upgrades, it is required that the
"dsmserv" server process is stopped beforehand.

During the upgrade there is a check that runs to determine if
    "dsmserv" process is running.
If it is running, the upgrade will stop, as server process needs
    to be stopped.

But, if "dsmserv" is running with arguments, the check will
    fail.

    ie
    ps -ef | grep dsmserv

    /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmserv -i
    /filsystem/instance_directory -q

In the Installation Manager logs, it will be seen:

     INFO:
    com.tivoli.dsm.prereq.server.ServerRunningCheck.checkServerLinux
    Unix(212
    ) : RC is not 0 when issue ps -ef | grep dsmserv$ | grep -v grep
    | grep
    -v jre | grep -v install.sh. RC is 1

RC 1 means that the check determined that the "dsmserv" process
is not running, even when it is.
    Thus the upgrade continues.

    IBM Spectrum Protect versions affected:
Server 7.1.x and 8.1.x on all supported Unix and Linux platforms

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: TSM IBM Spectrum Protect upgrade process
    checker prereq

Local fix

  • Stop the server process before running upgrade.
