Error description

  • The backup of a Microsoft Hyper-V guest might fail with
    following symptoms:
    
    dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss ANS5250E An unexpected error was
    encountered.
       TSM function name : StartSnapshotSet()
       TSM function      : 'StartSnapshotSet() failed with error
    VSS_E_SNAPSHOT_SET_IN_PROGRESS. 0X80042316'
       TSM return code   : -2147212522
       TSM file          : ..\..\common\vm\HyperV\vsssnap.cpp (1132)
    dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm:ss ANS1950E Backup using Microsoft volume
    shadow copy failed.
    
    The IBM Spectrum Protect client doesn't free
    'IVssBackupComponents' object when 'backup vm' fails. So the
    subsequent attempts to back up this VM, and any other VMs on
    the same Hypver-V host will fail with *snapshot in progress*
    error.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
    
    Review the IBM Spectrum Protect client schedlog and errorlog
    for any previous failed backups.
    If a previous backup failure occured, e.g. during the
    simultanious backup of two VM's residing on the same CSV
    (Cluster Shared Volume), this APAR aplies.

Local fix

  • Restart the Volume Shadow Copy service on all Hyper-V cluster
    nodes.
    To do this, open an elevated command prompt window and run the
    following commands:
       net stop vss
       net start vss

Problem conclusion

  • The problem is that when Microsoft HyperV writer returns an
    error the Spectrum Protect client doesn't release the
    IVssBackupComponents object and as result all subsequent backup
    can fail with VSS error. The code has been modified to free
    IVssBackupComponents in case of error.
