IT17035: PUREAPPLICATION SYSTEM: UNABLE TO CREATE NETWORK SEGMENT WITH NO GATEWAY

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• If the user attempts to create an IP group for an isolated
  network segment with the gateway designated as 0.0.0.0 (or 0::),
  the IP group will appear to be created successfully.
  
  Later when the IP group is used, an IP address from the
  group cannot be assigned to a virtual machine.
  The update job will fail and the following error is in the logs:
  
  com.ibm.purescale.iaas.update.actions.InstanceAddAddressAction |
   pvcAttachAdapterToVM The 'Attach Adapter' operation has failed
   in vmcontrol java.lang.IllegalArgumentException:
      java.lang.RuntimeException:
  

Local fix

• The user may delete the existing IP group and re-create it with
  a "dummy" gateway.   This will allow the addresses to be
  assigned as long as the IP group is not used as the Data or
  Management address for the virtual machine.  (These addresses
  require a gateway)
  

Problem summary

• Although PureApplication code tolerates the address 0.0.0.0
  as a gateway in our current code, special handling code needs
  to be added for OpenStack Neutron processing to prevent this
  issue.
  

Problem conclusion

• A code fix is being provided in PureApplication System and
  BlueMix Local System version 2.2.3.0.
