APAR status

Error description

  • If an incremental snapdiff backup finishes with a failure, the
newly created snapshot is invalidated and should be removed from
     the filer.
If that happens during the first initial snapdiff backup, the
invalid base snapshot is not removed.
After several failed backup attempts, the NAS shows the same
number of base snapshots still kept on filer volume.

Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: AIX , LINUX ,
     Windows client at 6.3 , 6.4 and 7.1 level

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :

At the beginning of the backup, the output shows :
    ----------
Performing a Full Incremental Backup of volume '\\host\volname$'
    Creating Base Snapshot.
    Using Base Snapshot 'TSM_A860576A3C7B12345_VOLNAME' with
    timestamp 22.06.2016 08:20:00
    ----------
If the incremental backup fails with at least one failure, the
above snapshot should be removed, but the snapshot still exist
    on the filer.

    Initial Impact: Low

Additional Keywords: TSM ISP Netapp ontap nseries

Local fix

  • Remove the oldest snapshots from the filer and correct the
error that cause the backup failure.

Problem conclusion

  • The code has been changed so that in the case of the initial
snapdiff full progressive backup failure the base snapshot will
be removed from the ~snapshot directory.

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for interim fix
package 7.1.3.3. Until the interim fix is actually available
this information is subject to change at the discretion of IBM
