Error description

  • When using the Tivoli Storage Manager for Virtual Environments
    Application Protection feature for Microsoft Exchange, if the
    Exchange databases are configured to use mount points the backup
    operation does not correctly store this information. The VMVSS
    backup will work successfully, but attempts to run mailbox
    restore operations will result in failure. The Tivoli Storage
    Manager for Mail: Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange user
    interface will present the following messages:
      Error: RC:2
      FMX0004E An unknown error has been detected.
      FMX5987E The TSMRDB recovery failed to return database to a
      consistent state because of the following error:<File not
      found:C:\TEMP\TSMVMVSS<Backup Date><Drive Letter>\<Mount Point
      Path>\<Database Name>.edb, rc=2>

    Note that the FMX prefix for the above messages may be reported
    with ACN (e.g. ACN0004E and ACN5987E).

    The cause for this behavior is due to the VMVSS backup operation
    incorrectly appending the mountPoint value to the real path of
    the database. This is an example showing how the 'mountPoint'
    value is added to the 'path':
      <APPDB_PATH size="142671872" logicalPath="Microsoft Exchange
      Server\Microsoft Information
      Store\TANTA\a6113973-6c16-4d56-b68f-a951563c0831"
      mountPoint="E:\MountDB\" fileName="MountTest.edb"
      path="E:\MountDB" partStyle="MBR" diskType="Basic" pId="0"
      dId="5"/>

    The restore operation will attempt to mount the VMVSS backup
    into a temporary structure without the mountPoint value;
    however, since the Application Protection function appended the
    mountPoint to the path it directs the Data Protection restore
    operation to use an incorrect path which results in Exchange
    failing to find the database.

    Environments using Application Protection 7.1

    Initial Impact: Medium

Local fix

  • If the mailbox restore operation used the option "Keep Recovery
    Database After Restore" (command line equivalent is /KEEPRDB)
    the .edb will remain under the temporary structure noted in the
    5987E message. This .edb can be mounted at an Exchange level
    and mail manually extracted from it.

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Client has been updated so that now
    it is possible to perform individual database restore from vm
    vbackups for databases residing on mount pounts.

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for Tivoli Storage
    Manager Client on Windows for interim fix package 7.1.6.3

    Note1: Until a Data Protection for VMware packaged fix of a
    fixing Tivoli Storage Manager Client level is available, Data
    Protection for VMware customers can install and use a fixed
    level of the the Tivoli Storage Manager Client in their
    environment.

    Note 2: The Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Client is a part of the
    Data Protection for VMware. In Data Protection for VMware
    environments, the TSM Client is also known as the data mover.

    Note 3: This is subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
