Error description
While writing data to a tape volume, under some rare circumstances a volume header may get damaged because of a hardware error on the tape library. Since the label of a tape volume is only verified at mount and dismount operation, this volume label damage is detected at dismount operation where the label is verified, but the volume is not marked as unavailable although the data written on this tape is unreadable. These messages are shown in the actlog: ANR8336I Verifying label of LTO volume aaaa in drive xxxx. ANR8311E: An I/O error occurred while accessing drive xxxx for READ operation, errno = 0, rc = 1. ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume aaaa in drive xxxx. ANR8468I LTO volume aaaa dismounted from drive xxxx in library bbbb. The trace with traceflags MMS PVR NA shows the problem: ANR8336I Verifying label of LTO volume aaaa in drive xxxx (/dev/yyyy). ANR8944E Hardware or media error on drive aaaa (/dev/yyyy) with volume aaaa(OP=READ, Error Number= 110, CC=0, KEY=03, ASC=11, ASCQ=00, SENSE=F0.00.03.00.00.00.00.58.00.00.00.00.11.00.00.00.00- .00.00.00.00.01.55.36.32.34.30.38.20.00.00.00.00.00.00.0- 0.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.- 00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00- .00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.00.0- 0.00.00.00.00, Description=An undetermined error has occurred). Refer to the Tivoli Storage Manager documentation on I/O error code descriptions. ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume aaaa in drive xxxx. If the volume label can not be read, the volume should be marked as unavailable and should not be used later on. Customer/L2 Diagnostics: Tivoli Storage Manager server does not specifically check the unrecovered read error with SCSI sense data 03/11/00. When the server fails to read a tape volume with this sense data, the server just detects the medium error of this volume and stops this I/O. The server does not realize that this medium error is an unrecovered read error and mark the volume as unusable. Tivoli Storage Manager Server Version Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager Server 6.3 and 7.1 on all supported plattforms Initial Impact: High Additional Keywords: TSM server Spectrum Protect library drive tape volume
