Error description
The user reports that when they attempt to attach a volume to a GPFS node they see the following error: attach volume [volume_Id] on vmId GPFSServer-Main.[gpfs_Id] failed with message: java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException: java.lang.Exception: CWZIP1987E An error occurred when contacting vCenter: CWZIP8741E The disk could not be added to the virtual machine. Caused by: CWZIP8741E The disk could not be added to the virtual machine. Caused by: Task failed on VMware server. reason: Incompatible device backing specified for device '0'. Caused by: InvalidDeviceBacking
Local fix
Problem summary
The volume ID being used for the attach operation was an ID from a previously deleted volume that had not yet been cleaned up from the virtualization management system. Need to randomize the ID value selection and provide better logging and cleanup if an error condition occurs.
Problem conclusion
A fix is being provided in PureApplication System version 2.1.2.0.
