IT11994: SOME TSM CLIENT DEDUP FILE BACKUPS CAN BE UNRECOVERABLE IF SERVER POOL RUNS OUT OF STORAGE

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • During IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) backup or archive
    operations using client-side deduplication, if the
    operation fails with 'ANS1311E Server out of data storage
    space', under certain conditions the backup or archive of the
    next file will be reported as successful by the TSM client or
    TSM API, but
    the backup or archive copy of that file is incorrect.
    
    The restore of an affected backup or archive copy
    will fail with an error such as 'digest validation error',
    'unknown format', or a crash. The data that
    was intended to be backed up or archived in the copy being
    restored may not be recoverable.
    

Local fix

  • Until you can apply a fixing level, use one of the following
    circumventions:
      1.use server-side deduplication instead of client-side
        deduplication
      2.turn off deduplication

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

  • A fix for this problem is currently targeted for interim fix
    packages 7.1.3.1, 6.4.3.1 and 6.3.2.5. Note that until these
    interim fixes are actually available, this information is
    subject to change at the discretion of IBM.
