IT08946: PUREAPPLICATION SYSTEM: NTP SERVER SET TO MANAGEMENT IP ADDRESS GATEWAY FOR DEPLOYMENTS TO MULTI-SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT PROFILE

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• On virtual machines deployed to multi-system environment profile
  on Power PureApplication Systems, the NTP server specified
  in /etc/ntp.conf is incorrect.    The server is set to the
  gateway for the management IP address assigned to the virtual
  machine.   The gateway address is defined in the IP group from
  which the IP address for the deploy was selected.
  
  For example, when deploying a virtual machine where IP group A,
  where 172.17.136.9 is the next available IP address in the
  group, and 172.17.136.1 is the gateway address for the IP group,
  the virtual machine with IP address 172.17.136.9 will have the
  NTP server 172.17.136.1 defined in the /etc/ntp.conf file.
  
  This  misconfiguration of the gateway address as the NTP
  server can cause the virtual machines to fail to initialize
  properly.  The virtual machines may deploy, but the status of
  the virtual machines may show an error icon.
  
  Log /0config/0config.log on a failed virtual machine may show
  curl error 22 and HTTP 401
  errors because the virtual machine cannot communicate properly
  with the PureSystem Manager to complete initialization.
  
  The error messages may include:
  https://<pureapphost>:9444/storehouse/user/deployments
  /<deploymentid>/parameter.json HTTP response 401 downloading
  parameter.json Trust enabled. Initializing keys and
  certificates...
  curl command failed with a return code of 22.
  

Local fix

• The curl error 22 and HTTP 401 errors may be because the
  gateway actually responds to NTP requests from the virtual
  machine but is not reporting the same time as the NTP servers
  configured on the PureApplication System settings page.
  

Problem summary

• The NTP server IP address for the virtual machine was being set
  incorrectly in the network configuration code.
  

Problem conclusion

• A code fix is being provided in PureApplication System version
  2.1.0.1.
