Error description
After mounting a Linux virtual machine, choosing to create NFS export, root is not able to view anything owned by root on the mount. This situation occurs when using the DP for VMware file level restore. But can also be seen outside of TSM. Steps to recreate: 1 - Using the VE GUI to mount a Linux snapshot. Choose the option to automatically create the NFS export. 2 - Log into the Linux VM as ROOT, mount the volume that was created during the NFS export. 3 - Attempt to cd (change directory) into a directory owned by root. Example of the error: bash: cd: mount-dir/testdir/: Permission denied This problem should only occur on directories with the following permissions: dr-xr-x--- 2 root root . Note: Reading anything owned by ROOT, on the mounted snapshot, on the mount proxy machine is successful. This problem only occurs on the machine that mounted the export. This problem occurs during the export command. The export is being done with options "ro,nohide, crossmnt"" which are not sufficient. Initial impact: Medium Versions affected: 7.1.1 Linux only.
Local fix
Step 1- mount the Linux VM, but don't choose to create the export. Step 2- after the mount is created, manually create the export. Example: exportfs -i -o ro,nohide,crossmnt,no_root_squash <target machine>:<local path to be exported> Step 3- mount the export on the target Linux machine. Step 4 - umount the file system on the target Linux machine Step 5 - remove export with command 'export -u <target machine>:<local path to be exported>
