Error description

  • When running Hyper-V backups in a Windows clustered environment,
using Clustered Shared Volumes (CSV), only one datamover should
    be processing
the CSV at a time. If multiple backup processes are started at
the same time, againstthe same CSV, this can cause:

ANS9301E Full VM backup of Virtual Machine 'VMNAME' failed with
    RC 109
ANS1062E Only a single image may be selected when a destination
    is entered.
The RC 109 means "Invalid Parameter".
This apar will address the incorrect handling of the RC 109.
This apar will also address the
    incorrect ANS1062E message.

    Initial impact: Medium

Local fix

  • Only run one backup process at a time when using CSV's.

Problem conclusion

  • When backing up virtual machines that reside on a Cluster Shared
Volume (CSV) using periodic-full backup strategy, the TSM
Backup-Archive Client prepares the CSV for backup to avoid data
corruption. During the preparation, the controlling node is
moved and pinned to the cluster node on which the backup runs.
Only one virtual machine can be pinned at a time, so backups of
multiple VMs on a single CSV must occur sequentially, one at a
    time.
The ANS1062E message cannot be changed. Instead the ANS5250E
message in dsmerror log is enhanced to provide more details on
    the return code:

ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
       TSM function name : AddFileToRequest
       TSM function      : ClusterPrepareSharedVolumeForBackup() for
drive 'filename' returned 5949 : Back up is in progress. Please
wait for backup completion before trying this operation again.
       TSM return code : 5949
       TSM file : ..\..\common\winnt\vssreq.cpp (5410)

Note: This problem applies only to the full (-mode=full) backup
strategy for Hyper-V VMs. It does not apply to the incremental
forever (-mode=iffull and -mode=ifincr) backup strategy for
    Hyper-V VMs.
