APAR status

Error description

• The current ANS5257E message is documented as the following :
  
  ANS5257E  The volume 'volume' does not support the requested VSS
  operation.
  
  Explanation: The volume does not support the requested VSS
               operation.
  Some reasons for this error include:
  *  For off-load backup requests, a hardware provider cannot be
     found
  *  For off-load backup requests, the provider does not support
     transportable media
  *  For local backup requests, the provider does not support
     persistent snapshots
  
  
  System action: Processing stops.
  
  User response: Retry the request using a supported backup
                 destination.
  
  In the 'Explanation' section, a fourth possible cause should be
  added to include the case when the snapshot operation is not
  supported for the current volume with the option
  VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER YES.
  
  In that case, the 'User response' section should also suggest to
  retry the operation with the option VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER NO.
  
  One example were this may apply is for Hyper-V guest backups.
  The message
  
  ANS5257E The volume '\\<hostname>\<disk>$\<volume path and
  name>' does not support the requested VSS operation.
  
  will appear if the following conditions are met :
  
  1. the volume is a Hyper-V cluster volume with a file system of
     type CSVFS (Cluster Storage Volume File System)
  2. the option VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER is set to YES
  
  The error occurs because CSVFS volumes VSS snapshots need to be
  done using the Microsoft CSV Shadow Copy Provider instead of the
  Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider.
  If VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER is set to YES, the client explicitly
  asks the operating system to use an unsupported VSS writer for
  the considered volume.
  
  In the above example, using the default 'VSSUSESYSTEMPROVIDER
  NO' will let the Operating System choose the appropriate
  provider and complete the operation successfully.
