IT04664: FLASHCOPY MANAGER INSTANT RESTORE OPERATION FAILS WITH DS8000 IN VMWARE SITE RECOVERY MANAGER ENVIRONMENTS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Instant restore operation fails for FlashCopy Manager for VMWare
  4.1.1 with DS8000 if  LVM.enableResignature setting is set to 1
  on the ESX host. That is very likely in VMWare environments
  where Site Recovery Manager (SRM) is present. SRM automatically
  sets this option to 1 during a test failover or an actual
  failover. After the SRM operation the flag remains enabled and
  will not be reset.
  
  Only data stores located on DS8000 storage systems are affected.
  Because this is the only storage type that requires a forced
  mount during backup operation.
  
  Root cause is that the URL of the datastore changes during the
  backup operation in this environment. During instant restore the
  original datastore can no longer be identified using its
  original URL.
  

Local fix

• Disable resignature temporarily:
  
  1. SSH to your ESX host
  2. execute: esxcfg-advcfg -g /LVM/EnableResignature    to query
  the setting of LVM.enableResignature
  3. if it's set to 1 execute:  esxcfg-advcfg -s 1
  /LVM/EnableResignature
  4. rerun the instant restore opration in FlasCopy Manager
