Error description

  • The FLASHCOPY MANAGER for VMWare manual indicates that support
for virtual machine backup and restore operations is limited to
virtual machine names and datacenter names that contain English
7-bit ASCII characters only. There is no reference for any
limitation of the DISK NAMES (Disk Label). In a non-English
(Japanese) environment, the VMware disk names are automatically
generated and will always use an 8-bit char disk name.

Within VMware, the disk label that is non-English (ie, in
Japanese) is shown correctly. However, within the Data
Protection for VMWare, the disk labels are not able to be
displayed. For example, the data may look like squares,
    asterisks or other unreadable characters:
      #CHILD disklabel: *** *** 1

Local fix

  • A restore can still be completed.
It will be necessary to determine the correct disk based on the
disk size and the disk file name which are both displayed in the
    GUI correctly.

within the Data Protection for VMware.

Temporary fix

file name which are both displayed in the GUI correctly.
