Error description

  • The documentation of the Tivoli Storage Manager Server storage
pool parameter MAXSIZE must be extended to explain the handling
of compressed files i.e. the client uses the client option
    "COMPRESSION YES".

The client informs during backup or archive operation the
server of the files size to be transmitted. This file size is
the real file size before compression. This real file size
before compression is being used by the server for the parameter
MAXSIZE in the storage pool definition.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics :
    Example:
The MAXSIZE limit in the primary storage pool is set to 100 MB.
So for all files with a size larger than 100 MB, the defined
next storage pool will be used for backup or archive operations.

If a file with a real size before compression is for example
192 MB and the physical (compressed) size is for example 74 MB,
it will be stored in the next storage pool on the server.

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
Tivoli Storage Manager Server documentation for versions
    5.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 7.1 on all platforms

    Initial Impact:
    low

    Additional Keywords:
    TSM, zz61, zz62, zz63, zz71, maxsize compressed

Problem conclusion

  • The Tivoli Storage Manager Information Center will be updated
to include more information about the MAXSIZE parameter of the
DEFINE STGPOOL and UPDATE STGPOOL commands. This information
will be added to the Administrator's Reference in "DEFINE
    STGPOOL" and "UPDATE STGPOOL" sections.

The section will provide the following information for the
    MAXSIZE parameter:
"The client estimates the size of files that will be sent to
the server. The client estimate is used rather than the actual
amount of data that is sent to the server. Client options,
such as deduplication, compression, and encryption, can cause
the actual amount of data that is sent to the server to be
larger or smaller than the size estimate. For example, the
compression of a file may be smaller in size than the
estimate, thus sending less data than the estimate.
Furthermore, a binary file may be larger in size after the
compression processing, thus sending more data than the
    estimate."

Affected platforms: AIX, HP-UX, Solaris, Linux, and Windows.
