Error description

  • Problem Description:
Reservation conflicts can occur on a library manager when a
library client cannot confirm to the library manager that a
drive is still in use due network issues.
The root cause is the network problem which needs to be fixed
outside of Tivoli Storage Manager itself, but further analysis
showed that the error recovery procedure on the library manager
is using wrong timestamps to recover from a network issue.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
The actlog of the library manager shows

ANR8469E Dismount of 3592 volume 123456 from drive ABC
    (/dev/ABC) in library IBMTS3500 failed.
ANR8475I Dismount of volume 123456 failed. It may still be in
    the drive.

and the actlog of library client shows

ANR0454E Session rejected by server LMTSM, reason: Communication
    Failure.
ANR8926W An Error was encountered while confirming the use of
    drive ABC in library IBMTS3500.
ANR8213W Session open with 10.255.255.001 timed out.
ANR0454E Session rejected by server LMTSM, reason: Communication
    Failure.
ANR9778E Unable to establish a communication session with the
    primary library manager.

A library manager trace with trace flags PVR MMS NA enabled
shows that the wrong timestamp in the error recovery procedure
    is being used.

    11:37:00.652 [2108410][smlshare.c][5311][DoConfirmMP]:Confirming
mount point for class 3592, libName IBMTS3500, devType 25,
    format 0, mpToken 8, mpTimeStamp 09/15/0113 09:27:13, for drive
    ABC, volume 123456.
    11:37:00.652
    [2108410][pvrmp.c][2031][pvrConfirmSharedMountPoint]:Confirming
shared mp 8 for TSMCLIENT - class 3592, library IBMTS3500,
devType 25, format 0, drive ABC, volume 123456, time stamp
    09/15/13 09:27:13.

The drive is confirmed in use but uses the library client's time
    stamp ( 09/15/13 09:27:13) not the library server's (
11:37:00.652 ) like it should be.
As result, the library manager attempts to reclaim the drive
which is still in use by the library client because the last
confirmed time is not in the last minute of library manager.

    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
Tivoli Storage Manager 6.2., 6.3 and 7.1 all versions

    Initial Impact:
    medium
