IC95972: ANS0338E AND ANS4177E DURING RESTORE OF A VIRTUAL MACHINE

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Restoring a Virtual Machine (VM) using the Tivoli Storage
  Manager
  Client command line, GUI, or VE plugin can fail with:
  ANS0338E An invalid operation was attempted on a node
  ANS4177E Full VM restore of VMware Virtual Machine 'VM1' failed
  with RC=47 target node name='TARGETNODE', data mover node
  name='DATAMOVERNODE'
  This can only occur under the following conditions:
  1 - 6.4.x.x client is used for the backup and restore.
  2 - The following ENCRYPTKEY option is used during the backup:
  "ENCRYPTKEY GENERATE"
  Default for encryptkey is SAVE.
  NOTE: "ENCRYPTKEY SAVE" or "ENCRYPTKEY PROMPT" will not cause
  this apar.
  3 - One of the following INCLUDE.ENCRYPT settings is used:
  "include.encrypt *\...\*"
  "include.encrypt *:\...\*"
  "include.encrypt *"
  4 - "-mode=IFFULL" or "-mode=IFINCR is used during the backup.
  Default for mode is FULL
  NOTE: "-mode=FULL" or "-mode=INCR" backups will not see this
  apar.
  If encryption was enabled after the IFFULL backup and the
  IFFULL backup is still selectable for restore, the IFFULL backup
  can be restored successfully.
  The Tivoli Storage Manager does not support encryption with VM
  backups.
  The client should produce an error message when encryption is
  attemptedduring a VM backup.
  The Tivoli Storage Manager client, TDP for Vmware, and Tivoli
  Storage Manager Fastback manuals need to be updated to reflect
  encryption is not supported.

Local fix

• Remove the ENCRYPTKEY and INCLUDE.ENCRYPT options from the
  dsm.opt file.
  Take new IFFULL backups for ALL virtual machines.
  

Problem summary

Problem conclusion

• The backup-archive (datamover) clients now stop before
  attempting incremental forever backups of TSM for VE virtual
  machines if encryption is specified as an option for the backups
  in the client options file. The client issues a message and
  will not perform the backup. Encryption must be disabled now
  for those backups for the backup to proceed.
  

Temporary fix

• 6.4.1.2 interim fix for Windows and Linux x86 in October 2013
