Error description

  • The tape volume may be unexpectedly checked in as the empty
volume label by the following scenario.

    1. Configure the automated library A as Library Managed
    Encryption (LME).
    2. Do LABEL LIBVOLUME the tape volume in the library A.
    3. Move the tape volume to another automated library B that is
also configured as LME but is set the different encryption key
    from the library A.
    4. Do CHECKIN LIBVOLUME the tape volume to the library B

After step 4 was done, the tape volume is checked in the volume
B, and is displayed as the empty volume label in output of
QUERY LIBVOLUME as the following example.
    ---
    tsm > query libvolume
    Library Name: library_name
Volume Name: <== Empty volume name is displayed
            Status: Private
             Owner:
          Last Use:
      Home Element: 1,055
       Device Type: LTO
    Cleanings Left:
        Media Type: LTO-4
    ---

The tape volume should not have been checked in since no valid
label name was determined due to the incorrect data encryption
key. Expected result is that CHECKIN LIBVOLUME ends with
    FAILURE with ANR8357I message.
    ---
ANR8357I Error reading label of volume from slot-element
element address in drive drive name of library library name.

Local fix

  • In case the tape volume has been checked in as the empty volume
label, it can be checked out by the following administrative
    commands.
    ---
    tsm > checkout libvolume library_name " " checklabel=no
    remove=no
    ---
