APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• Tivoli Storage Manager can be executed via root login the
  following way:
  
  /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmserv -u instance_user  -i
  /instance_path
  or
  /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.dsmserv -u instance_user  -i
  /instance_path
  .
  
  Above command will start  a V6 tivoli Storage Manager Server
  under the instance_user.  However, the server will run under the
  root user's resource limit.  This may cause some  unexpected
  behavior if the root user's resource limit is much lower than
  the instance_user's resource limit, or if the root user's
  resource limit does not meet Tivoli Storage Manager V6 server's
  minimum requirement.
  
  L2/customer Diagnostics:
  
  1: A V6 Tivoli Storage Manager Server is running with the
  following configure:
  
  root user's hard and soft limit of nofiles is 1024
  ulimit -Hn 1024
  ulimit -Sn 1024
  
  tsminst1 or instance_user's nofiles hard and soft limit is 65536
  ulimit  -Hn 65536
  ulimit -Sn 65536
  
  .
  2: Starting Tivoli Storage Manager via the following command:
  
  /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/dsmserv -u tsminst1  -i
  /home/tsminst1
  or
  /opt/tivoli/tsm/server/bin/rc.dsmserv -u tsminst1  -i
  /home/tsminst1
  
  3: After server starts , the following warning is logged in the
  actlog:
  
  ANR3619W The user limit for open files is below  the
  recommended minimum value of 4096.
  
   4: db2diag.log shows the DB2 is getting root id's nofile :
  
  nofiles (descriptors)  = 0x00000400
  
  Decimal value  of 400 is 1024.

Local fix

• Local fix:
  
  Set up root user's resource limit to be the same with instance
  owner.

Problem conclusion

• This problem was fixed.
  Affected platforms:  AIX, HP-UX, Solaris,
  and Linux.
  
  After installing the fix level, the resource limit values
  of the specified user are applied when you use the
  rc.dsmserv script with option "-u" to start the Tivoli
  Storage Manager server.
