Error description

  • On a library of type VTL a check for WORM media uses a broad
lock which can cause mount delays. The check for WORM media is
unnecessary as VTL Libraries are assumed to not be multi-media
    capable.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics (if applicable)
From a PVR MMS it takes over 30 seconds for Tivoli Storage
Manager to see if the drive was mounted.
       21:16:57.525
    [20778][mmsscsi.c][5195][ScsiWaitUntilReady]:Waiting for drive
V078 (/dev/rmt41) to become ready in library VTL01.
       ...
       21:17:30.693 [20778][pvrntp.c][4931][NtpTestReady]:Testing
    readiness of drive V078 (/dev/rmt41).
       ...
       21:17:30.878
    [20778][pvrntp.c][6234][NtpObtainMediaType]:Obtained a media
type of 56 and WORM info of 101.

    *NOTE*
    1) Under Define Library Libtype=VTL it states:
If you are defining a VTL library, your environment must not
    include any mixed-media...
    2) With physical tape a 30 second or less delay is not critical
due to the time required to mount the media. In a VTL it can
become an increasing problem as the number of drives increases

    Platforms affected:
    Server 6.3 Unix Linux Windows

    Initial Impact: Medium

Additional Keywords: ZZ63 lib virtual tape

Local fix

  • Reducing the number of drives on the VTL may reduce the delay
