IC77864: ONTAPE ARCHIVE WITH BACKUP_FILTER AND TAPEDEV SET TO A REMOTE HOST HANGS

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• You want to backup to a remote host, so you set TAPEDEV as
  documented for this case:
  host_machine_name:tape_device_pathname
  Ontape archive works fine in this case.
  
  However, if you additionally choose to use a backup filter,
  and set BACKUP_FILTER - for example to /bin/gzip -
  the archive will start,
  but after displaying "100 percent done" the ontape hangs,
  until you decide to abort it using something like Control-C.
  
  In case of a logical log backup the last visible message is
  "Do you want to back up the current logical log? (y/n) n"
  

Local fix

• A possible workaround is to mount the remote filesystem locally,
  and set TAPEDEV accordingly.
