Error description

  • If user root is used to bring the engine online, and the unix
    permissions for where the oninit command was run from do not
    allow user informix to change directory into that location, then
    some SQL admin API operations will fail to execute, and generate
    failure records in the sysadmin:command_history table.

    Two operations that have been tested and known to not work
    correctly would be trying to execute either onstat commands via
    the SQL admin API or cdr commands. Both of these functions use
    the same internal call admin_exec_system() so both of these fail
    the same way.

    Here is an example of sysadmin:command history records for a
    failed cdr and onstat SQL admin API operations:

    cmd_number      108
    cmd_exec_time   2011-03-11 15:27:22
    cmd_user        informix
    cmd_hostname    NA
    cmd_executed    cdr sync replicateset
    cmd_ret_status  133
    cmd_ret_msg Unable to locate ouput file
    [/spare1/product/1150FC5/tmp/cmd000480C0].

    cmd_number      109
    cmd_exec_time   2011-03-18 13:19:36
    cmd_user        informix
    cmd_hostname    livestrong
    cmd_executed    onstat
    cmd_ret_status  -1
    cmd_ret_msg Unable to locate ouput file
    [/spare1/product/1150FC5/tmp/cmd000DA6C2].

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED:                                              *
    * Affected users are those that start the database server in a *
    * directory that is not 'writable' by the informix user and *
    * then try to execute specific admin api commands that try to *
    * write to the directory in which the server was started. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * Users will see errors returned from the specific admin api *
    * command they are running indicating that a file cannot be *
    * located or opened.                                           *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Upgrade to 'product' 11.50.xC9 or ensure that user informix *
    * has 'write' permission to the directory in which the *
    * database server was started. *

Problem conclusion

  • This problem has been addressed in 11.50.xC9.
