Error description

  • When running onspaces to add a dbspace, the command will fail to
    create the dbspace and incorrectly warn that
    $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG can not be accessed when run in an
    environment where the CPU affinity of the VPCLASS onconfig
    parameter has been set to specify an invalid range of CPUs.

    For example on a 2 CPU system, if VPCLASS is set to affinitize
    on CPUs 1-3 (where CPUs 2 and 3 do not exist), onspaces will
    report the following message:

    Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
    WARNING: Cannot access configuration file
    $INFORMIXDIR/etc/$ONCONFIG.
    Cannot build a new Space.

    This message is misleading, and can not lead directly to proper
    resolution or identification of the root cause of the failure to
    create the dbspace.

    By comparison, the online.log does correctly report a message
    that identifies the problem, by displaying a message of:

    21:27:44 VPCLASS 'cpu' not enough physical procs for affinity

    When VPCLASS is updated to either disable affinity, or to set
    affinity to a valid range of physical CPUs to match the
    available hardware, the online.log message and onspaces warning
    no longer appear, and onspaces will successfully create the new
    space.

Local fix

  • Disable CPU affinity for VPCLASS in the onconfig, or correct the
    range of CPU's associated with the VPCLASS aff parameter.
    A change to the VPCLASS will require an instance restart.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * When affinity in onconfig is set to an incorrect value *
    * (non-existent CPU), onspaces can't add dbspace.              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    * Upgrade to IDS 11.50.xC9.                                    *
    ****************************************************************

Problem conclusion

  • We make unnecessary reads of the onconfig during execution of
    onspaces which prevents adding of dbspace for unrelated problems
    with ONCONFIG values.
    Fixed in IDS-11.50.FC9.
