Error description
A Tivoli Storage Manager lanfree backup or archive can fail with "no space available in storage pool". Server processes like reclamation may also fail with the error message "There is insufficient space in storage pool". . Examples from the Tivoli Storage Manager activity log: . ANR0522W (Session: 4321, Origin: NODE) Transaction failed for session 1234 for node NODENAME (PLATFORM) - no space available in storage pool STGPOOL and all successor pools. . ANR1086E Space reclamation is ended for volume XXXXXXXX. There is insufficient space in storage pool. (PROCESS: 805) . Server trace with flag ASVOL will show... Pool out of scratch with numScratch A1, numRsvdScratch A2 and maxScratch A3. ...where A1 + A2 >= A3 . . The problem is caused by a timing problem with the Tivoli Storage Manager storage agent when disconnecting from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. . . *** Customer/L2 Diagnostics *** To verify this, run SHOW SSPOOL and look for the storage pool (STGPOOL) the lanfree operation will use it. In the reported case SHOW SSPOOL on the Tivoli Storage Manager server returned: .... MaxScratch=500 ... NumScratchVols=13, NumRsvdScratch=487 . The TSM server can allocate MaxScratch=500 volumes. But the server already has 487 scratch volumes reserved (NumRsvdScratch=487). It will allow maximum 13 (NumScratchVols=13) additional volumes to be requested from scratch. The use of collocation needs more than 13 volumes. . The NumRsvdScratch value become abnormal large is the character of this issue. . To fix the problem, increase the MaxScratch value in the affected stgpool. . Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected: Tivoli Storage Manager server 5.4, 5.5 and 6.1 on all platforms . Initial Impact: medium . Additional Keywords: zz61 TSM IC45865 STA
Local fix
- Run SHOW SSPOOL on the Tivoli Storage Manager server and locate the storage pool for the use of the LANFREE operaton. Sum up "NumScratchVols+NumRsvdScratch". If this the sum is >= "MaxScratch" then increase "Maximum number of scratch volumes allowed" for the LANFREE storage pool by number of scratch volumes needed. - Another way to clear this up is to recycle the Tivoli Storage Manager server.
