Error description

  • A Tivoli Storage Manager HSM client running on AIX hangs when
performing a LAN-free recall of a file that resides in a FILE
storage pool, not enabled for LAN-free operations.
Under such circumstances, assuming the HSM client is also
configured for LAN operations, the recall should automatically
switch to a LAN recall instead of LAN-free.

    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
The procstack command of the hung dsmrecall command would show
the following call stack for example :

    # procstack 815270
    815270: dsmrecall filetest
    ---------- tid# 2125905 (pthread ID: 1) ----------
    0xd0352dcc read(??, ??, ??) + 0x1a8
    0x1028dc98 RecallFile(RestorePrivObject_t*,RestoreSpec_t*,...
    0x10285170 ProcessFile(void*,RestoreSpec_t*,RestEntry_t*)() ...
    0x10282944 rpDoIt(void*,RestoreSpec_t*)() + 0x428
    0x10260e74 DscRecall(Sess_o*&)() + 0xae4
    0x1026005c  main() + 0x204
    0x100001e8  __start() + 0x98

The QUERY SESSION output shows the client session is in RECW
    state. For example :

    tsm: SERVER1>q sess f=d
                  Sess Number: 123
                 Comm. Method: Tcp/Ip
                   Sess State: RecvW

A TSM server trace would show the server is waiting to receive
    data. For example :

    <timestamp> [nn][smtrans.c][1197][SmRecvVerb]:Recv Verb: Session
     123, Length=18, Size 4, Code=0048, Type=ObjRtrv.
    ...
    <timestamp> [nn][sstrans.c][5503][RtrvFramed]:Rtrv thread
     waiting for data.
    ...
    <timestamp> [nn][sstrans.c][5521][RtrvFramed]:Rtrv thread
received 122132 bytes of data, offset 48.
    ...
    <timestamp> [nn][smtrans.c][1103][SmRecvVerb]:SmRecvVerb:
Receiving verb for MYNODE(123) using buffer a18ca70.
    <timestamp> [nn][tcpcomm.c][1351][tcpRecv]:tcpRecv: 4 bytes
     requested on session 123
    <timestamp> [nn][tcpcomm.c][1423][tcpRecv]:tcpRecv:
Reading 512 bytes from socket on session 123

    TSM Versions Affected:
TSM Servers V5.4, V5.5 and V6.1 on all platforms.

    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply fixing level when available to *
    * storage agent and server. This *
    * problem is currently projected to be fixed *
    *                 in levels 5.4.7, 5.5.5, 6.1.5 and 6.2.2.     *

    * subject to change at the discretion of IBM. *
    ****************************************************************
The problem was an hang of an hsm recall operation when the
recall was proxied through the storage agent. The fix is to
move up to the latest level of the server and storage agent.
If a user does not move the storage agent to a level with the
fix in it, they can expect to see the following message come
out during an hsm recall proxied through the storage agent:

    ANR0480W Session 85 for node <node name> (<platform>)
terminated - connection with client severed.

Problem conclusion

  • This problem was fixed. Affected platforms: AIX, HP-UX, Sun
    Solaris, Linux, z/OS, and Windows.

Temporary fix
