Error description

  • During a long running GENERATE BACKUPSET command (for instance
if the node has multiple terabytes of data stored), the memory
consumption of the Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 server process can
grow such high, that - dependent on the overall memory available
on the system - in worst case the complete system gets
    unresponsive.
The Tivoli Storage Manager server is allocating memory that is
transaction based and since this particular transaction is kept
open for the entire GENERATE BACKUPSET process the memory
continually grows. The amount of memory that is allocated is
dependent on how many data segments have to be opened to
generate the backupset. This is obviously exacerbated when the
objects being generated for the backupset reside in a
deduplicated storage pool and the node being processed has a lot
    of storage tied to it.
    .
    Customer/L2 Diagnostics:
To verify you are affected by this APAR you can look at the
output of the following undocumented service command (issued
multiple times, for instance each 5 minutes):
    SHOW MEMORY
    .
If this APAR applies, you will see over time an increasing
amount/entries memory allocated by asrtrv.c, for instance:
    93532 entries, using 26188960 bytes, from asrtrv.c(2098)
    170027 entries, using 47607560 bytes, from asrtrv.c(2098)
    [...]
    7599267 entries, using 2127794760 bytes, from asrtrv.c(2098)
    7643786 entries, using 2140260080 bytes, from asrtrv.c(2098)
    .
    .
    Tivoli Storage Manager Versions Affected:
Tivoli Storage Manager 6.1 servers on all supported platforms.
