IC62259: THE DSMSERV LIBRARY CLIENT PROCESS MAY APPEAR TO HANG WHEN STARTING UP

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • During the start up of the dsmserv (library client) the 'storage
    service' component is started before the 'session manager'
    component. The 'storage service' component may find scratch
    volumes to be deleted which are managed by a library manager.
    The 'storage service' component will enter a waiting state
    because the 'session manager' component is not ready and a
    connection to the library manager cannot be made to delete the
    scratch volumes.
    L2 Diagnostics:
    Error messages may be seen in the activity log or at the console
    during the time period in which the TSM server was starting up
    as follows:
    ANR0454E Session rejected by server TSMLIBMGR, reason:
    Communication Failure.
    
    Capturing a trace (SESSION SESSIOND)of the dsmserv process while
    it is starting up will give the following additional detail:
    
    06:37:27.588 [0][smexec.c][3376]: Timed out waiting for session
    manager initialization.
    ====> delete of the first volume timed out.
    07:02:27.664 [0][smexec.c][3376]: Timed out waiting for session
    manager initialization.
    ====> delete of the second volume timed out.

Local fix

  • After a timeout has occurred the TSM server will continue and
    startup successfully. The amount of time required for the
    timeout will vary depending on the number of scratch volumes
    that are pending deletion.
    For each volume to be deleted, the timeout value of the timed
    wait is approximately 25 minutes
