APAR status

Error description

  • When processing several large SMTP email documents, the IBM
Content Collector SMTP Connector might run out of memory. In
this case, the documents cannot be processed. The problem occurs
 when multiple large SMTP email documents are processed in
parallel by the SMTP Connector.

Local fix

  • Remove the large documents that cause the problem from the IBM
Content Collector blacklist one by one and repeatedly restart
the Task Route Engine to process the documents.

Problem summary

  • When processing large SMTP email documents (>150 MB), the IBM
Content Collector SMTP Connector might run into an insufficient
memory error if the large email documents are processed in
parallel. If there is only a single large email, the email can
be processed.
If the SMTP Connector runs out of memory when processing a
document, it attempts to process the document in single-threaded
mode. This usually succeeds for email that is smaller than 200
MB. If the document cannot be processed in single-threaded mode
either, it is added to the blacklist as permanent failure.

Problem conclusion

  • Starting with IBM Content Collector 3.0.0.4 LA005 and 4.0 Fix
Pack 2, memory consumption of the SMTP Connector has been
reduced, so that large email documents can be processed without
memory issues. Depending on how many large documents are
processed in parallel, the issue might still occur, but the SMTP
 Connector will recover from the error automatically.
