Abstract

When running Global Mirror on DS8000, if the host requests an update to a track that is in transit via the background copy process, the data for that track may be sent incorrectly to the secondary.

Content

A rare timing window has been identified between the Global Copy synchronization process identifying a track to transfer and a host updating that identified track at the same time. This can cause the newer version of the track to be transferred to the secondary incorrectly.  This exposure only exists on the R6.3, R7.2 and R7.3 levels listed in the table below (8700/8800/8870) when running Global Mirror.

This error originates on the Global Mirror primary but the secondary would be exposed if became the primary. This problem was detected by hosts during Disaster Recovery testing; no error is detected by the DS8000. IBM recommends updating microcode on machines running Global Mirror to resolve the problem. After the code has been applied on the primary machines, any volumes that may have been affected will be corrected when the first consistency group is formed.
