How to Dynamically Add/Remove Virtual Ethernet Adapters Using the New HMC "Enhanced" GUI

Troubleshooting

Problem

This document describes how to dynamically add/remove Ethernet adapters using the new HMC "enhanced" (or "tech preview") GUI.

Resolving The Problem

The new HMC enhanced GUI simplifies dynamic logical partitioning (DLPAR) operations for the users. Unlike the older GUI, users do work directly with the virtual adapters (in the VIOSes or the client) but rather just modify the client and select the desired network they wish to bridge to.

Notes:

1.The enhanced GUI does not allow multiple virtual adapters on the same "network". Multiple adapters on the same network (VLAN) may be desired for some configurations such as IBM i partitions that wish to have the service tools LAN adapter (in other words, LAN console) on a different adapter than the partition TCP interface for availability and service concerns. The circumvention is to use the command line or the "classic" GUI.
2.To persist dynamic changes in the current profile, you should either ensure the partition properties has Save configuration changes to profile set to Enabled prior to the DLPAR or use the Configuration > Save Current Configuration task after the DLPAR.
3.VIOS partitions do not have a Manage task. This is because the VIOS adapters are handled (added/deleted/modified) automatically when the virtual network is modified. Virtual network configuration is performed using the server's Manage PowerVM task.
4.In the "Enhanced" view, users that wish to see the "classic" view of the partition properties can click the partition name's hyperlink (in place of the missing Properties task).

To dynamically add/remove Ethernet adapters using the new HMC "enhanced" (or "tech preview") GUI, you should do the following:

1. Select the AIX/Linux/IBM i client partition to modify, and click Manage.

2. Click Virtual Networks:

Manage: P8TIOS

3. Click Manage Network Connections.

Make the desired changes. To add an adapter on a new network, check the desired network. To remove an adapter, uncheck the network. In the example below, network Subnet66 will be selected. Click OK to save the changes:

Manage Network Connections: P8TIOS

4. Verify change.

The HMC will display the new network, VLAN ID, switch, and bridge used. Click on Adapter View to see the virtual adapter number and the device name created in the partition:

Manage: P8TIOS

In the example below, the device is CMN05 and the virtual adapter is 8:

Manage: P8TIOS
