MSDASQL Availability on 64-Bit Windows

Troubleshooting

Problem

Microsoft OLE DB provider for ODBC, MSDASQL availability on 64-bit Windows versions.

Resolving The Problem

The MSDASQL provider can be used to allow applications that use OLE DB, such as Microsoft SQL Server, to access data on the IBM System i products using the IBM iSeries Access for Windows ODBC driver.

Users migrating to 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows and SQL Server that wish to use the iSeries Access for Windows 64-bit ODBC provider have found that there initially was no 64-bit version of the MSDASQL provider. They have been forced to use the IBM OLE DB providers. Many users report that they do not have the same level of functionality and would like to use our 64-bit ODBC driver. The MSDASQL provider is a Microsoft product and they have stated in the past that MSDASQL is a deprecated technology. The information from Microsoft that the MSDASQL provider is deprecated can be found at the following Web site:

msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms811968.aspx

As of 04/04/2008 Microsoft released a 64-bit MSDASQL provider for Windows Server 2003 SP1 and SP2 for x64(AMD64) and Itanium(IA64) processors.
Refer to the following Web site to download the provider for Windows Server 2003:

www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=000364db-5e8b-44a8-b9…

Windows Server 2008 & Windows Vista SP1 are the first Windows releases to include a 64-bit version of the technology and Windows 7 also includes the 64-bit version.
