VM65271: PEVM65179 SMSTATUS FAILS WITH FPLDSR146E AND RC8

APAR status

• Closed as program error.

Error description

• After applying PTF UM33873 ( APAR VM65179 ) and following the
  instructions in Appendix F of the z/VM 6.2.0 Systems Management
  Application Programming (SC24-6234-04) manual, the SMSTATUS
  command fails with:

  FPLSCA001I ... Running "< DMSLST002E File"

  Error Data is:COMMAND IN ERR=PIPE < DMSLST002E File,rc:146
  Ready(00008); T=0.01/0.01 13:57:29

  The failure is due to the SMSTATUS EXEC trying to read file
  DMSSISVR NAMES only from the SFS directory VMSYS:VSMWORK1.DATA,
  but DMSSISVR NAMES does not exist there.  By default, the
  DMSSISVR NAMES file is located on the MAINT 193 disk.

       This APAR, VM65271, addresses several problems with the
  SMSTATUS EXEC:
  1.  The SMSTATUS EXEC fails with messages
        FPLDSR146E File "DMSLST00 FILE *" does not exist
        FPLSCA003I ... Issued from stage 1 of pipeline 1
        FPLSCA001I ... Running "< DMSLST002E File"
        Execute rc:8 rx:RS FILE SAVE ERROR
        Error Data is:COMMAND IN ERR=PIPE < DMSLST002E File,rc:146
      when the DMSSISVR NAMES resides on the MAINT 193 disk,
      which is the file's default location.
  2.  The SMAPI documentation states that the SMSTATUS EXEC will
      retain the n most recent output files from invocations of
      SMSTATUS, where n is determined by the Server_StatusLog_Max
      attribute in DMSSICNF COPY.  SMSTATUS does save n output
      files, but it does not save the most recent n output files.
  3.  The SMSTATUS output log file does not indicate the status
      (active or not active) of the SMAPI worker and request
      servers before appending the console logs of the servers.
  4.  SMSTATUS EXEC invokes the CP FOR command for each SMAPI
      worker and request server to obtain the console logs of
      each server.  The SMSTATUS code does not handle a RC70
      (not authorized to act FOR userid) returned from the FOR
      command.
  

Problem conclusion

• APAR VM65179 is in error.  SMSTATUS $EXEC has been
  updated as follows:
  1.  SMSTATUS $EXEC has been updated to look for the DMSSISVR
      NAMES file and the DMSSICNF COPY file using the default
      CMS access order of the SMAPI servers:
      the data directory (VMSYS:VSMWORK1.DATA)
      the source directory (VMSYS:VSMWORK1.)
      the 191 disk of the source directory's userid (VSMWORK1)
      the MAINT 193 disk
  2.  SMSTATUS $EXEC has been updated.  The sort method for
      determining the latest SMSTATUS output log file(s) has been
      corrected resulting in the removal of the oldest output log
      file(s).
  3.  SMSTATUS $EXEC has been updated to append the status of the
      SMAPI workder and request servers before appending the
      console logs of the servers.
  4.  SMSTATUS $EXEC has been updated to handle a return code 70
      from the CP FOR command.  The code appends the record
      Not authorized to get log of serverid
      to the SMSTATUS output log file.
