Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users of Enterprise COBOL V5+ compiling and *
    * running programs that MOVE data from *
    *                 numeric-edited data items to unsigned        *
    * numeric USAGE DISPLAY data items, where the *
    * source data is not numeric. *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Enterprise COBOL V5+ sets the sign in *
    * the receiver to x'F', while Enterprise *
    *                      COBOL V4.2 did not.                     *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: Apply the provided PTF. *
    *                                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    In situations where invalid data is used, the behaviour is
    undefined. Enterprise COBOL V5+ set the sign to x'F' because it
    is correct that unsigned numeric data items should have a sign
    of x'F'. Enterprise COBOL V4.2 and earlier did not do this.

Problem conclusion

Temporary fix

Comments

  • To maintain compatibility with Enterprise COBOL V4.2 and
    earlier for customers using invalid data, Enterprise COBOL V5+
    was changed to no longer set the sign of an unsigned numeric
    USAGE DISPLAY receiver to x'F' unless the sign bits in the
    sender were x'F'.
