APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • By default, mod_mvsds tries to guess the content-type based on
    the content of the file through a sniffing mechanism. This is
    a departure from the DGW MVSDS module which wrote content as
    text/plain if the content type was not explicitly set via
    addtype for a given file. This APAR will provide an option to
    enable the old DGW style behavior for migrating users which
    relied on it.

Local fix

  • Add the following in MVSDS and mvsds locations in the
    httpd.conf:
    ForceType text/plain

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: IBM HTTP Server users of the mod_mvsds *
    *                  module running on z/OS.                     *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: The content of a text file is not *
    * presented correctly at the client *
    * browser when the IBM HTTP Server *
    * incorrectly read the file in binary *
    *                      mode.                                   *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    If the file type can not be determined by the dataset name,
    then mod_mvsds will by default inspect the contents to try to
    determine if the file is a binary type file. This check
    incorrectly determined the text file was binary.

Problem conclusion

  • The directive MvsdsNoBinarySniff is added to be able to
    control the binary file mode detection function. Setting
    MvsdsNoBinarySniff to On will disable the binary mode
    detection function.

    The fix for this issue is targetted for IHS fixpacks:
     - 9.0.0.0 (IIM/WAS GA 9.0.0.0)
     - 9.0.0.1 (PTF for z/OS 2.2)
     - 8.5.5.10
