APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • With Enterprise COBOL V5, the Working Storage section of a
COBOL program is now included into the Writable Static Area
(WSA). When linking several programs together, the size of the
WSA can become very large. This may result in very high
    overhead during initialization.

    ****************************************************************
In Enterprise COBOL V5, when DATA(31) is in effect, data items
in WORKING-STORAGE are stored in an area called the 'writable
static area' (WSA). This area is unnecessarily initialized to
zero when the COBOL program is in a DLL. This initialization
overhead may become significant when there is a very large
number of Enterprise COBOL V5 programs linked in the DLL. This
problem does not occur for non-DLL.

Problem conclusion

  • Enterprise COBOL runtime library code is put in place to support
    the fix in PI45771.
