PI25087: (COB V5.1) FILE MERGE RESULTS IN ABEND U4083 IN CEEPLPKA WHEN INPUT FILES BEING MERGED ARE EMPTY PLUS RENT/NORENT MIXTURE 0C4

Error description

• (COB V5.1) This APAR addresses 2 issues:
  
  1) A file MERGE results in abend U4083 in CEEPLPKA when
  the input files being merged are empty.
  
  The COB V5.1 runtime will be modified to handle empty files as
  input to the MERGE statement.
  
  2) An abend0C4 may occur when a mixture of RENT & NORENT
  programs are linked together.
  
  For example:
  Program Y is compiled as NORENT.
  Program Y statically calls program Z which is compile as RENT.
  Therefore, program Z is linked into the program Y module.
  If the NORENT program Y is the main entry point, then an
  abend0C4 may occur.

  * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: 1. The COBOL library routine reads the  *
  *                      first record of the input files as part *
  *                      of the initialization for the merging   *
  *                      process. The merge logic later on       *
  *                      wrongly assumes that at least one input *
  *                      record area is valid, which causes an   *
  *                      abend if the files are empty.           *
  *                      2. When a program object containing a   *
  *                      mix of COBOL V5.1 programs compiled     *
  *                      with the RENT and NORENT option, and    *
  *                      the primary entry point of the program  *
  *                      object is COBOL V5.1. NORENT, the       *
  *                      WORKING-STORAGE section for the RENT    *
  *                      program is not initialized correctly.   *
  *                      The program may get an 0C4 abend.       *
