Error description

  • An abend 0C4 Pic 11 can occur after adding buffers to a data set
opened in LSR Mode. z/OS 2.2 will attempt to add buffers to an
LSR Pool if there are insufficient buffers. During this process
after adding buffers VSAM will attempt to update the RPL
feedback code to indicate to the caller that buffers were
    added.
In the reported case VSAM had added buffers and was attempting
to update the RPL feedback to indicate this. However the
register used to point to the RPL had previously been used to
point to storage to be freemained, so when VSAM attempted to
update the RPL feedback code an abend 0C4 pic 11 occurred.

Local fix

  • Specify sufficient LSR buffers so that Dynamic Buffer Addition
    is not attempted.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: AN ABEND0C4 OR 1 BYTE OVERLAY MAY OCCUR *
    * DURING DYNAMIC BUFFER ADDITION. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION: APPLY PTF.                                   *
    ****************************************************************
WHEN INSUFFICIENT BUFFERS EXIST IN A LSR POOL TO SATISFY A
REQUEST DYNAMIC BUFFER ADDITION ADDS MORE BUFFERS TO THE POOL. A
RPLERRCD IS SET TO INFORM THE CALLER DYNAMIC BUFFER ADDITION HAS
OCCURRED. AN ABEND0C4 OR ONE WORD OVERLAY MAY OCCUR WHEN
SETTING RPLERRCD AS THE POINTER TO THE RPL IS NOT PROPERLY SET.

Problem conclusion

  • MODULE IDA019RP IS CHANGED TO CORRECTLY POINT TO THE RPL WHEN
    SETTING RPLERRCD.
