IZ97382: UMOUNT -F ON AN NFSV4 MOUNT HANGS APPLIES TO AIX 6100-06

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • If you have an operation such as a dd running over an
nfsv4
mounted filesystem, with the hard option set (the
default).
If you try to unmount using the force option(umount -f)
it
 will hang indefinitely. Also, commands like nfsstat will
hang.

Example dd operation:
while true
do
dd if=/dev/zero of=/nfs_fs/bigfile count=2048
done

Local fix

  • 1) do CTRL+C (or kill -9) on the umount process after
about
 10secs

2) specify the "soft" option on the mount

Problem summary

  • On an NFS mount, if a copy operation is going on, and the
server is down, and if we issue a forced unmount command, it
may hang indefinetely.

Problem conclusion

  • Changed NFS client side code to avoid a deadlock which caused
the unmount command to hang.
