APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • When a J2 filesystem is NFS exported to clients, and an
    I/O
operation (read/write) is happening when the file is
    removed
then this leaves the filesystem space in use although the
disk blocks are not used. This results in "df" showing
    more
space used while "du" reports not as many blocks in use.
The problem happens on AIX 6.1 only and not on AIX 5.3.

Local fix

  • Unmount and remount the J2 filesystem.

Problem summary

  • If a file on an NFS exported J2 file system is deleted on the
NFS server while the file is in use by a NFS client (ie, reads,
writes, etc), there exists a timing window where the disk
space the file is using may not be immediately released.

Problem conclusion

  • Do not add vnodes who's corrosponding inode has a link count of
    zero to the vnode cache.
