APAR status

Error description

  • mounting a CIFS filesystem fails,
if an ipaddr of the Windows server is used and the
hostname
is not resolvable neither with DNS nor /etc/hosts.

Only a generic error message is returned

# host 192.168.0.8
host: 0827-803 Cannot find address 192.168.0.8.

# mkcifsmnt -f /win -d Temp -h 192.168.0.8 -c Aurel
There was an error connecting the share or the server.
Make sure the lsdev command shows that device nsmb0 is in
the Available state.  Also make sure that the share name,
user name and password are accurate.

Local fix

  • 



Problem summary


    

  • Only a generic error message is displayed during SMBFS mount;
when IP address specified is resolvable neither with DNS, nor
with /etc/hosts.

    



Problem conclusion


    

  • Now, if IPaddress to hostname conversion fails; return code of
the conversion routine is checked and appropriate error message
is displayed.
