Error description

  • AIX can crash when running on High End P8 model E880 (9119-MHE)
Only LPARs running AIX 7.1 TL3 SP3 and later, in native P8
    mode, are exposed.
Any such LPAR running on a system with more than 128 total
cores is exposed, which is possible only with the the above P8
models configured with 3 or more drawers of the 48 core node,
or 4 drawers of the 32 core node.
    .
This problem is resolved in SP5. For SP3 and SP4, ifixes are
    available here:
    ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/IV69116/
    https://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/ifixes/IV69116/
The ifix is concurrent update capable, but will require
temporarily disabling CPU folding. You can disable folding and
    install as a hotpatch with:
    > schedo -o vpm_fold_policy=0
    > emgr -i <ifix.epkg.Z> -C
    > schedo -o vpm_fold_policy=(previous setting)
    .
Customers installing AIX 7.1 TL3 on the above model P8 with
more than 128 total cores need to set the system to run in P7
compat mode before attempting installation or the boot for the
install will fail. After installation, apply the SP5 or the
ifix above, and then the system can be set to run in P8 mode.

Local fix

Problem summary

  • AIX kernel incorrectly thinks maximum possible processors is
1024 in some places. This limit can be surpassed with 3 & 4
    node configurations of E880 systems.

Problem conclusion

  • Correct AIX logic to allow for the maximum possible processors.
