IV66995: FC 5287 ADAPTER SENDING LLDP MULTICAST CAUSES NETWORK FAILURE APPLIES TO AIX 6100-09

APAR status

  • Closed as program error.

Error description

  • FC 5287 network adapter by default sends LLDP multicast
    packet.
    If an etherchannel is configured using this adapter
    without
    custom MAC address, network communication thru this
    etherchannel
    stop working after etherchannel failover to the backup
    adapter
    occurs. The reason is that the primary adapter keep
    sending LLDP
    multicast packet containing its MAC address while the
    backup
    adapter also uses the primary MAC address after failover
    and
    this confuses the network switch since they sees the same
    valid
    MAC address from two port (primary and backup) at the
    same time.
    

Local fix

  • Disable LLDP function of the network switch.
    

Problem summary

  • FC 5287 network adapter by default sends LLDP multicast

Problem conclusion

  • ODM attribute introduced to enable or disable LLDP on need
    basis.
